COVID-19 (also known as the “Coronavirus”) is caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2 and is detected by a swab taken from the throat and nose of the patient.
To reliably detect an ongoing infection the laboratory will perform a molecular test to detect the presence or absence of the virus using a method called “real-time reverse- transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction” commonly known as RT-PCR. This method is currently the only reliable way to detect an ongoing infection.
Since Coronaviruses are RNA viruses a conversion step is required to first convert the viral RNA into DNA. The DNA is then copied many times and detected using fluorescent substances.
Our tests are performed in an accredited laboratory and are different from the rapid tests offered which provide instant results. The tests that offer instant results are not recommended by the UK authorities.
Your kit is delivered to your home, with simple instructions. To return your kit simply post back to us using the prepaid envelope included.
In most cases we deliver results within 24 hours of being received back at our laboratories. Currently under 24 hours for over 80% of tests kits returned.
Our laboratories look for two viral genes (N gene and E gene). We only use MHRA approved faculties so you can be reassured our results are accurate.
PCR Test (Combined throat and nasal swab test):
When can I have the test?
You should wait at least 2 days after potential exposure to Covid-19 before having the PCR test. It is suitable if you are worried that you may have Covid-19 now, you are displaying symptoms such as a fever or continuous cough, or you have recently come into contact with someone who has Covid-19. PCR test's (swab tests) should be carried out within 5 days of first symptoms.
How does the Covid-19 PCR test work?
The KDI test uses state of the art PCR techniques to look for the Wuhan strain of the virus. The principle of PCR is to extract, amplify and identify the viral RNA sequence of the virus. This testing method ensures the high degree of specificity of this test for the Wuhan and related strains of Coronavirus nCoV-2019. Our test is sensitive to fewer than 100 copies of the target viral RNA, making it a highly accurate test.
How accurate is the test?
This Covid-19 PCR test is 99.8% accurate with the correct sample taking technique. It is important that you follow the instructions included in your test kit. The current evidence shows a mean incubation period before symptoms emerge of 5 days. This test has a sensitivity of under 100 copies of viral RNA and shows 100% homology to the Wuhan strain of the virus. This means that, provided there are more than 100 copies of viral RNA in the sample, the test will successfully detect it. Please bear in mind that this is a newly identified organism and there is much that the medical and scientific community have yet to learn about it.
When will my home testing kit arrive?
Orders placed before 3pm, Monday to Friday, will be sent out on the same day by special delivery.
How will I receive my results?
You will receive in your testing kit details of how you need to register. You will be contacted regarding both positive and negative test results as soon as they are available. This is usually within 48 hours of posting the test. You must register your kit at the time you take your sample as per the instructions included.
What if my test is inconclusive?
A small number of tests may come back as unclear or inconclusive. This simply means it was not possible to say if you had the virus when the test was done. There are a number of reasons why this might happen and it unfortunately means you will need to be tested again.
NB: KDI will not be liable for losses incurred as a result of an unclear or inconclusive test.
I'm flying soon when do I need to take the test?
All customers purchasing these tests must use their own judgement about the best date to purchase, carry out and return the test to us. The company cannot take responsibility for any test timelines and associated outcomes affecting travel. Unfortunately the company can provide no absolute guarantee as to when you will receive your result as all UK labs are currently experiencing extreme delays.
Find out if you’ve had COVID-19 with our Home Total Antibody Test. This test allows for the detection of IgM and IgG antibodies, which appear in the blood after infection. By doing so, it will tell you whether or not you have previously been exposed to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
The test looks for one or both kinds of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19:
🔹 IgM antibodies, which happen early in an infection
🔹 IgG antibodies, which are more likely to show up later.
We will post out to you everything you need to collect your blood sample from home. A small amount of blood is needed from your finger, this you will be able to collect using our simple to use lancet and collection vile. Return the sample to us in the prepaid envelope and receive your results. This test is manufactured by Roche (Anti-SARS-CoV-2).
